A ride to Kootenay Lake and a town called Kaslo 07-17-14

Around 8:30 we all piled into Greg’s Dodge Caravan

and headed for Kootenay Lake. Our ultimate destination was a small town called Kaslo on the west shore of the lake. We followed Hwy. 3A north along the east side of the lake. Kootenay Lake is approximately 85 miles long by an average of about 6 miles wide.

Our first stop was Kuskanook Harbor.

The lake on this day was quite placid but apparently it can become quite treacherous as attested to by this monument to those who have drowned in the lake between 1898 to 2007.

We continued our ride along the lake shore. The next stop was to see “The Glass House”.

IMG_0439

I have seen other houses built out of wine bottles and beer bottles but what makes this house different is that it was built by a Mortician and the bottles he used were embalming fluid bottles.

I cant believe that each of these bottles represents a customer of the Doctor’s because there are thousands of them.

We left the Glass House and continued traveling north. Our next stop was the Grey Creek store.

This is an old fashioned general store and is interesting to wander around in.

They had an impressive wood stove display.

On a wall in a stair well hung some funny signs; here are two of them.

We left the store and continued our ride along the lake shore until we came to Kootenay Bay and boarded a ferry to cross the lake.

Here is another ferry coming back.

We disembarked at the town of Balfour

and continued north on the west shore of the lake.
We crossed several beautiful streams. We stopped at this one to get some pictures.

There were some tall fireweed here

and Patti wanted a picture of them.

Eventually we arrived at Kaslo.

IMG_0489

Kaslo is a tourist town with lots of shops for the ladies to peruse.

On the way into Kaslo we followed this restored military jeep.
It was parked on the street so I had to get some pictures of it.

The guy that restored the jeep did a great job

and it was beautiful.

After the ladies finished their shopping and we had ogled the jeep as much as we could, we met for lunch at the Kaslo Hotel.

The restaurant was out of diet drinks so when no one was watching I went out to the van and got a diet Sprite for Patti and a diet Coke for Donna.

When the waitress came back to our table she became very upset that we had brought drinks into the dining area. After that she was not very friendly. The food was okay but we were not happy with the way the waitress treated us after the drink episode.

After lunch we drove around the town a little.
Patti got a picture of this owl sculpture in someone’s yard.

We left Kaslo and headed back south toward the ferry landing.

We stopped to check out a campground and found this pretty little waterfall.

Eventually we arrived back at the Balfour ferry terminal. We got back on the ferry and headed across the lake again.

I think this Dad had taken his kids on a kayaking trip that was too far for them.

Patti got a picture of this light house.

Back on the east side of the lake we continued south and stopped at a fruit stand in the town of Creston.

We got home around 9:00. It was a very long day but a lot of fun and very picturesque.
