Yesterday around 11:00; Becky, Dennis, Dennis’ son Brandon, his girl friend Teresa, Roy, Susanne, Patti and I left the RV park for a ride to the Horse Tanks. After the rain we had I was curious if there was any water in the tanks.
Dennis and Brandon.
Becky and Teresa.
We drove south on 95
to the Stone Cabin where we turned east toward the KOFA reserve. We stopped to air down in a large flat area.
From there we headed down the dirt road enjoying the view of the KOFA range.
At intersection #42 I stopped to let the others catch up. Dennis pulled along side and said that he had forgotten to put gas in his jeep and was below a quarter tank. After commiserating for a while we decided that he would probably have enough gas to complete the ride as we were only going another couple of miles to the tank.
We turned right at #42 and headed for the tanks. About a mile in we saw Bob’s Van parked in a camp spot just off the trail.
We pulled in to his spot.
Dennis asked Bob if he had a hose so we could siphon some gas out of one of the other vehicles.
Bob disconnected the propane line that goes to his barbeque. The line was pretty long so we decided to try siphoning directly from my jeep to Dennis’s.
I pulled my jeep up on a hill as Dennis backed his jeep behind me. Unfortunately the tank on my jeep has an anti siphon device so we couldn’t get the gas out of my jeep.
Fortunately Bob’s Van is old enough that it doesn’t have the anti siphon device so Dennis borrowed a water jug from Bob and siphoned some gas from Bobs tank.
As we were siphoning the gas Patti found a pincushion cactus that was in bloom.
On the way I noticed that the temp gauge on my jeep was going from normal to hot and back again. While Dennis was putting gas in his jeep
I checked the coolant level in the radiator and found that it was very low. I put water in the radiator and tightened a few couple clamps.
We asked Bob if he had gotten any rain during the storm. He said that it just sprinkled a little over night. Dennis thanked Bob profusely and we continued to the tanks.
The tanks were pretty dry
It was still a successful trip as neither Susanne, Roy, Teresa or Brandon had been here before.
From the tanks we drove a short distance to a large flat area where we had lunch.
After lunch we took a walk up the hill to check out the Indian grinding cave.
Seed grinding holes.
The view from the cave.
We left the cave area and headed for home. Patti and I stopped to visit with Bob for a while and then continued the trip home.
Along the way we saw our first beaver tail cactus blooms of the season.
It was a fun ride.
