We are going to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park today to do a jeep trail called Elephant Hill. The map shows a road that looks like a short cut from Monticello to highway 211 which goes to The NP entrance.
Yesterday, Patti and I decided to see if the road was open.
We headed west from Monticello on Abajo Rd. toward the mountains.
We passed a campground that was completely snowed in.
After driving about 5 miles we came to where the snow was drifted across the road.
Here we turned around and looked for some where else to go.
On the way back down the road we saw a bunch of turkeys crossing the road.
A little further we turned south on the road to Loyd Lake.
We had some nice views of the mountains along the way.
We got to Loyd Lake and found that it was very low.
I guess it will fill up when the snow in the mountains melts.
We passed Loyd Lake and continued out the road. Eventually we came to a very muddy section that ended at more snow.
We didn’t feel like playing in the muddy snow today so we turned around there.
Just turning around the jeep got a little muddy.
The rest of the group showed up around 4:00.
We went to dinner with the group at the R&F Cafe. The food was good.
Today (03-24-14) we will meet at the RV park around 9:00 and head for the Elephant Hill.
