Camped at 9400 Feet, Off FR14, south of Del Norte, CO Day 14, CDT.

It looks like everyone survived last night’s thunder storm so around 9:00 we left our camp above the beautiful valley.

We headed south on FR114.
This is mostly high desert sage country but it is still beautiful.

As we climbed higher we came into some forest of what look like Spruce.

A little higher we get into the Aspens.

Neat Rock.

We passed this neat looking rock just sticking up out of the ground.

Back to Sage Brush.

We got over that mountain and back to sage brush and grass lands. We are still over 8,000 in elevation.

Wild Flowers.

We saw some pretty wild flowers along this stretch of the road. I don’t know what they are called but we saw a couple groups of them.

Interesting  Roof.

We passed this old log cabin.

Most log cabins I have seen have a peaked roof. This one appears to have had a domed roof. I wonder if it was originally a sod roof.

Here is another old cabin.

Carnero Pass.

We were climbing the whole time.

Eventually we went over Carnero Pass.

Going Down?

As we started down the other side we passed this interesting rock.

The scenery along the road is pretty spectacular.

Out of the Mountains Again.

After a while we dropped down again to sage brush country.

IMGP1234

Lunch.

We stopped at the La Garita Cash Store to get a bite for lunch.

IMGP1236

Unfortunately all they had was dessert. A giant Cinnamon Bun and huge Chocolate Brownies. Cheryl and Dennis shared the Cinnamon Bun and a Chocolate Brownie ala mode.
Patti had a Brownie ala mode and I just had a Brownie. By the time we were done with them there were no desserts left.

Del Norte.

After lunch we headed south across a large valley heading toward some mountains.

IMGP1240

Eventually we came to the small city of Del Norte. Cheryl and Dennis are planning to motel it so we made arrangements to meet them on the trail at 9:00 tomorrow morning.

Camping at 9400 feet.

Patti, Bob and I stopped at a market in town for a couple things then we headed out FR 14. to look for a camp spot.

We drove about 30 miles and eventually found a suitable spot on a side road in the trees.

I was a little concerned about how Bob would do at this altitude but he did just fine.

After supper, we had a nice thunderstorm that sent us all to our beds.
