Whitmore Canyon Overlook, Grand Canyon, AZ.

Getting There.

We left the RV park around 9:30 and headed back to St. George, Utah where we gassed up at the Pilot station and got back on River Road. The dust is so bad on this road that we let Denis get about a mile ahead of us before we followed.

We followed River Road to the Mount Trumbull School House.

The school house sits at a crossroads. The last time we were here we tuned left and went to Toroweap Overlook. This time we went straight toward the Bar 10 Ranch and Whitmore Canyon.

The Road.

The sigh on the road said that it is 15 miles to Whitmore Canyon. As it turned out it was actually 22 miles.
The road gets smaller once we pass the school house.

The Bar 10 Ranch.

Entering the ranch, we had to go through three gates; one on each side and one in the middle of the ranch.

At the south end of the ranch we saw an airplane on the ground.

IMG_9014

There wasn’t anyone around the plane that we could see.

IMG_9015

We had only gone a couple miles past the plane when we heard an airplane flying over kind of low. Patti thought it was the plane we just passed. I didn’t think so as we had just left it a few minutes ago and no one was around it.

We Continue Toward the Rim.

As we get closer to the canyon the road continues to degrade and becomes rather bumpy with a lot of rocks in road.

About five miles past the ranch we can see the river.

Even closer to the overlook.

At the Overlook.

Here is a view looking up stream.

Here is the view looking down stream.

We had lunch here and spent a little over an hour here enjoying the views.

IMG_9037

Rafters.

We watched another group of rafters come down the river.

Coming toward us.

Continuing down stream

They pulled in at a beach just down stream for a break.

Picking up litter.

While we were sitting there, a strong gust of wind came by. Sue wasn’t sitting in her chair and it was almost blown into the canyon. She caught it just in time.
At the same time, the wind blew my handkerchief into the canyon. It didn’t make it all the way but it stopped right near the edge.

IMG_9048

I hate litter and I bitch like hell when I see where someone has left stuff around.
I waned to get that handkerchief but Patti was raising a stink about me trying.
To be honest it was kind of a precarious spot but I felt that I could get the kerchief.
I sat and thought about the problem for a while and eventually came up with a plan.
I took a piece of rope and a bungee cord and tied the bungee to the rope and tried to hook the Kerchief with the hook on the bungee.

IMG_9052

I managed to hook it a couple times and brought it closer but couldn’t get it all the way up. After a while I gave up on the bungee hook and climbed down to rescued the handkerchief.

We hung out here for a while longer enjoying the view…

but eventually it was time to go home so we loaded up and left around 2:30.

The Plane is Gone

When we got back to the airstrip we could see that the plane had left.

You can see the air strip and the fuel truck but no airplane.

IMG_9070

I guess Patti was right about the plane that flew over us being the plane we saw at the strip.

Notice the white things on the ridge behind the airstrip. They are Conestoga Wagons. Apparently they are for the guests of the ranch to sleep in.

Eventually we made it back to St. George and filled up at Pilot again.
We got on I-15 heading home when we saw an Information Sign over the highway stating that there had been a crash in the gorge and the right lane was closed.

When we got to the gorge the traffic was stopped in both lanes.
As it turned out a couple of big rigs had a bit of a tangle and turned I-15 into a parking lot for about two hours.

We got home around 8:00 which made it a very long day.

Today (Saturday).

We are staying home today; there is laundry and housework to do.
I am not sure about Sunday but I’ll let you know what we do.
