Sand Flats OHV Park: Fins & Things and Hells Revenge.

Sand Flats.

There is an area just east of Moab in some rolling slick rock that is set aside as a place for off road vehicles to play. I think it is run by the city and costs $5 to get in. Within this area are several trails of varying difficulty almost all of it is on slick rock.

Here we are heading for the park. You can see some slick rock in this picture. It is not slick by any means.

Fins & Things.

The first trail we are on is called Fins & Things. You can see the trail meandering around and over the rock mounds.
The black lines on the rocks aren’t painted on nor are they paved. The marks come from all the rubber that gets scrubbed off tires as they role across the “slick” rock.

Over all the trail is pretty mild but there are some interesting challenges along the way.

We wandered around here for a couple hours going round and round and up and down.

Hells Revenge.

We left Fins & Things and drove to the next trail called Hells Revenge.

IMG_3080

Hells Revenge starts with a long ride up and over a very narrow ridge of slick rock. . .

IMG_3082

then we go through a narrow canyon.

IMG_3086

The trail takes us past a view point.

IMG_3090

At the view point is this sign. You will have to blow this up to read it.

IMG_3089

Some people have no respect.

After leaving the view point we continued our ride going up and down some steep rocks.

IMG_3092

This is how it looks as you just crest the top.

IMG_3094

Here we are going down, notice the beautiful canyon to our left.

Heading For Hells Gate.

IMG_3117

There are some bumpy spots on this trail. Well actually most of the trails are pretty bumpy.

IMG_3121

There was a lot of traffic out here today. We couldn’t figure out why until some one mentioned that it was “Spring Break”.

Here is a hummer tour we passed.

IMG_3118

When we got to Hells Gate and the Overlook we saw that there were a lot of jeeps, motorcycles and ATV’s waiting to try Hells Gate and at the overlook.

IMG_3126

We decided to have lunch while we waited for the crowd to thin out. It never did.

IMG_3128

Hells Gate.

Hells Gate is a V notch that is very steep and a bit dangerous.

IMG_3129

The trick is to keep the tires up on the side of the wall and straddle the notch.
This guy didn’t do that and had to be towed up the last bit.
Note: Both those ATV’s are driven by Paraplegic's.

IMG_3134

After they pulled this guy up…

IMG_3138

the next guy made it with no problem.

IMG_3139

Next it was Dennis M’s turn. He asked me to spot for him.
Here he gets a little air on the passenger side.
Without front lockers, this is where my jeep would have been in trouble.

IMG_3144

Dennis  made it up with no problem.

Greg was next and he did fine.

IMG_3149

Dennis M spotted for Dennis K.

IMG_3157

Discretion is the better part of valor. Winking smile

Bill also made it look easy with Dennis’s help.

IMG_3161

Everyone took a turn…except me. I decided that that was a place for jeeps with front and rear lockers not just rear ones.
We left Hells Gate and continued our ride.

IMG_3173

The Hot Tub.

There are a few of these large basins in the rock.

This one is called the hot tub

IMG_3194

People actually drive their vehicles down into this one and back out again.

Here is another hole. It doesn’t look like anyone has driven into this one.

IMG_3200

The Dragons Tail.

We left the pot holes behind and began a long steep decline toward the exit of the park.
This section is called the Dragons Tail and is very steep at the end.

IMG_3203

It was right about here that the battery in the camera went dead.

We made it down to the pavement with no problems and headed back to our RV.

Thai Food.

Neither Patti nor I have ever eaten Thai food. The plan for dinner was to go to a Thai restaurant that Cheryl and Dennis had been to and liked called Arches Thai.
Patti and I were a little apprehensive but decided to give it a go.
It took us a while to figure out what to order but eventually we were ready.

Patti ordered a Lo Mein with chicken and said it was great.
I had Pad Thai; which is noodles and vegetables with chicken. That was also very good.

Okay that was Tuesday’s ride in Moab.
