Secret Pass is in the mountains east of Bullhead City. It got it’s name because in the 1800’s the Indians used this pass to get away from army troops that were chasing them.
To Get There.
We met at the Home Depot parking lot around 9:30. Once we were all there we headed east on Highway 68.
Remember this Rock?
You will see it from all sides today.
We turned right off the highway and went south into the desert.
Here is that rock from the east side.
Rugged Cliffs.
We drove around the hills for a while…
Enjoying the views of the rugged cliffs and spires.
You can see the trail winding its way through the mountains ahead of us.
Most of the trail is in pretty good shape.
An Interesting Arch.
We saw this rock that formed an arch.
As we drove past it we could see that there was a round rock in the middle of the arch so that it looked like an eye complete with an eye ball. I guess we will have to call this “eye ball arch”.
A Tight Spot.
The trail climbs toward the power lines.
There was a tight squeeze around one of the power line towers.
A Rocky Road.
Past the power line tower the road gets a little rocky.
The Notch.
Not to far past the tight spot we drive through a notch in the mountain.
A Closed Mine.
We took a side trail to an old mine.
The mine tunnel was closed off with an iron gate so we couldn’t enter.
There was a good view from looking west from here. You can just see a thin strip of Lake Mojave in the middle right of this picture.
First Burros.
We left the mine and continued along the trail enjoying the views of the rocks.
After traveling for a while we came across our first group of Burros.
There were five burros in this group. From the look of the gray one in front, soon there will be six.
Off we go again traveling along the trail.
Lunch.
We found a spot for lunch.
Fingers Crossed.
Patti noticed this rock and decided that it had its fingers crossed.
The End of the Trail.
Eventually we came to the end of the Secret Pass Trail.
The trail ends down the wash a short distance.
The wash has some fun rocks to drive over…
and under.
I am making sure this rock doesn’t fall on me.
Once we went under the rocks we had to turn around and go back to the trail up the rocks.
It looks a lot tougher that it is.
Bad Boys.
There is a hitching rail for horses near the trails end.
The ladies thought that all us guys were bad boys and had to be punished so hey put us in the stocks.
Heading Back.
We left the trail’s end to start our return trip. It was decided that we take a different way back to the highway.
The trail took us along these red hills. . .
with views of some fantastic country.
Here we drop into a gorgeous canyon.
More Burros.
These look like young ones.
This might be momma.
A Rock Eagle.
We drove through a narrow canyon …
and over a hill…
When we crested the hill, Patti says, “look at the Eagle”!
I looked up from the trail and sure enough, there was a mountain that looks kind of like an Eagle ready to take flight.
Sculptured Rock.
We passed through the valley of the Eagle and over another ridge.
We came around a bend in the road and and saw this fantastic rock spire.
Patti pointed out that the top of the spire looked like an Owl sitting on the rock.
If you look at the bottom left in picture you will see “King Kong” sitting on a rock.
On the right and about half way down from the owl, there is a rock that looks like a smiling man wearing a pointed hat.
As I sit here looking at the picture I see another rock that looks like a Gorilla or maybe a Bear.
Do you see it?
He is looking at you.
Here is a better look at Kong.
At another place along the trail Patti saw this rock and decided that the rock on the right was the “Grinch” and “Santa” had turned him to stone. On the rock to his left appears to be the face of a kitten.
The Last Burro Picture.
A little ways down the trail we saw some more burros. They are nice and healthy looking.
Over a few more hills and through a couple of valleys and we were on the Highway.
We got back to the hotel around 4:00 and after relaxing for a while we went took the water taxi to the Aquarius to have supper at the OutBack Steak House.
The food was great.
Okay that’s all for today.
