Background.
On our first trip to Moab, about nine years ago we took a ride on a boat down the Colorado. As we drifted along we could see these crazy rock crawler dudes going up this very steep and scary trail. I took one look at that and decided that we were never going to go on that trail. The name of the trail is “Moab Rim”. Never say never.
On Our Way.
We met the rest of the group at the old car wash on Kane Creek Road around 9:00. Once we were all ready we headed west along the Colorado River.
A beautiful morning along the river.
Once we got to the parking area we aired down and waited for a group of vehicles to clear some obstacle.
Once they were clear we headed up the trail.
The climb is pretty steep with some minor ledges to climb.
The first Challenge.
The first Major challenge on the trail is called “The Crack”.
You have to make a sharp right turn and climb a steep shelf. This is challenging for jeeps with both lockers to get up.
I’m not sure how I got into this situation but it was a bit scary. If you go off here, there is about a 50 foot drop to the road along the river.
Once they got a strap on my jeep it was easy to get up.
More ledges.
The Z Turn.
This is called the Z turn and is pretty tough.
I got this far and needed some strap assistance get over it.
Here is the next part of the Z turn.
They just left the strap on my jeep for this one. You can see the strap laying on the ground on the left side of the above photo.
Once we cleared that spot we continued to climb.
Old Gnarly Tree.
Another Strap Job.
Dennis K got his rear differential hung up on a rock and had to be pulled free.
Getting Strapped Again.
I am not sure which spot this was but as you can see the front of the jeep is in the air again and Dennis M is hooking up the strap.
The Top.
Eventually we made it to the top where there is a nice view of Moab Valley.
We drove along the top for a while enjoying the views.
There were more challenges along this section but none that I couldn’t get over.
After a mile or so we stopped to enjoy the views.
Turning Back.
We decided that this would be a good spot to turn around and head back. Yes we have to go down all those ledges that we drove up on the way here.
Notice, that the trail markers go right through that big hole on the left.
Another old tree.
The view coming back down the trail.
Buggies and Kids.
We came across these Buggies full of little kids.
Views Going Down Hill.
The down hill trip is very scenic.
Here, it looks like Dennis M is driving off into the river.
Here is the Crack going down hill.
With a little guidance from Dennis M it was much easier going down.
By now Patti was so frightened (again) that she got out of the jeep and decided to walk the rest of the way to the parking lot. Patti got out of the jeep several times on this trail.
I have to say that I am glad we did this trail so we won’t have to do it again. It was pretty scary in several places.
Lunch at the Szechwan Chinese Restaurant.
We were off the trail early enough for lunch. The plan was to eat at the Szechwan Restaurant.
We were disappointed.
The last time we were here it was great. This time it was not very good.
Okay that was the Moab Rim Trail.
Scary shit!
