02-02

Yesterday we went back to the north Plomosa mountains with Becky, Dennis, Suzanne and Roy.
I thought I had found a new road on the map to check out but as it turned out we had been on it before and I just forgot. ;o(
We stopped at a place where during WW2 there was a secret air field that woman pilots ferried plane's into. It is on the north side Plomosa Rd. at Mile 6.
After leaving there we traveled about another mile down the trail. I noticed a large mound of red rock to our right and drove across the desert to its base to check it out. When we got there it wasn't as impressive as it looked from a distance. We decided to drop down into a wash to the south of us and follow it for a while.

Along the wash were several interesting rock formations,

arches and caves.

This one we called "The Dragon's Head"

This is "The Big Pig"

Of course rock formations are a lot like cloud formations. Everyone sees something different in them. Some people see only rocks or clouds. How sad.
We followed the wash until it came back to Plomosa road. We turned around and went back to the original trail where we continued traveling north and crossed several
sand dunes. At one of these dunes I turned east thinking that we might have lunch at the top of the dune. After making it about 50 yards the sand got very soft and Clifford almost got stuck. Fortunately we were able to turn around and get out of the sand. "Sand is not your friend".

We found a good spot for lunch in a wash between the dunes.

After lunch we continued our drive north. We Checked out a couple of trails going into the mountains to our right. They ended at places where someone had done some prospecting.
As we drove along we of course passed some nice scenery.

I keep trying to get pictures showing how gnarly some of these trails are but the photo's just don't do it.

Eventually we made our way passed the 4 peaks and after driving through gullies and over rocky hills we came to Plomosa road at mile 8 and headed for home.
It doesn't matter if you travel the same road every few days you still see new stuff and always have a good time.
I have been trying to figure out a way to put maps of where we go on this blog. Below is my first attempt. Let me know if it helps.
