Where to Go.
We met up with the Wednesday jeep group in the parking lot of the Carl’s Jr. at the west end of town.
Originally we were going to go to the Cinnabar Mine and Tom was going to lead. Unfortunately, Lillie (Tom’s wife) is ill so they couldn’t make it.
We discussed where to go and decided to make it an easy day and just play around in the hills just west of Quartzsite.
Heading West.
From Carl’s, we got on I-10 and drove west a couple of miles and took the Dome Rock Road turnoff. Just after exiting the interstate we got on a trail heading into the hills and stopped to air down then headed out the trail.
We went up steep hills…
along ridge tops…
and through washes.
We passed this old piece of mining equipment. Do you know what it is?
We don’t.
Here is a little steep spot coming out of the wash.
Not a problem.
Who Chewed the Saguaro.
We passed this old chewed up Saguaro. At least it looks like it has been chewed on. The only thing that I know that will eat the Saguaro is a Big Horn Sheep or a Burro. We have seen Big Horns in the area but no Burros.
A Mining Area.
We stopped at a large flat that used to be a mining claim.
Someone had laid out quartz stones on the hillside in the shape of a pic and shovel.
Lunch on Diablo Pass.
After leaving the mine claim we wandered around heading more or less northeast looking for the trail that goes over Diablo Pass.
We took a few dead ends but eventually got on the right trail and went over the pass.
A little ways over the pass we took a side trail to the right and stopped for lunch at the end of the trail at another old mining area.
Rock Crosses.
Some one with more energy than I have, climbed to the top of the ridge and erected some rock crosses.
After Lunch.
After lunch we continued along the trail.
We stopped to take a picture of this old Iron Tree skeleton.
The trail took us past the closed Marble Quarry.
From there we got on Boyer Pass Road and drove back to town.
It was a short day and an easy ride but it was still fun to be out in the desert.
