A Good Start.
At 9:00 we left our beautiful ridgetop camp heading down hill.
Not to far from camp we came upon this old abandoned cabin.
We will see more old abandoned structures on our journey south.
Crossing the Divide
On todays ride we crossed the divide five times.
This is the first crossing, where the CD hiking trail cross the CD mountain bike trail.
We continue down hill.
A Good Natural Spring.
We stopped at a spring on the side of the road where Bob filled his water jugs.
while Bob was filling the jug Patti took a couple of flower pictures.
Big Dandelion.
Onward!
Once Bob’s jugs were filled we continued through some beautiful valley’s. Here is an interesting set of dissolving structures in one of those valley’s.
This old barn won’t last much longer with the roof in such bad shape.
Mountain Bikers.
We passed a few people biking the trail. So far not as many as I thought we would encounter.
These young women were going only as far as Colorado.
That’s all?
Lunch on the Divide.
We drove by the abandoned Empire Mine.
A little further down the road we stopped to take a peanut break where the trail crosses the Divide.
After the break; off we go again.
Another crossing.
What? A Train?
We were coming down this long wide valley where we could see for a couple miles. At the far end of the valley I could see some smoke rising and some thing long in front of the smoke. When it was first visible it was to far to make out. Once we got close we discovered that it was a short Passenger Train.
The train runs out of a small railroad town called Blossberg.
The only way to get to Blossburg is by train or by a 3 mile hike over the hills.
We encountered more bikers. These two were going north.
and more bikers.
Lunch.
We stopped for lunch at another Divide crossing and sat in the shade of the van such as it was.
While we were having lunch Dennis noticed his rack was amiss. At some point along the trail a brace that he had to hold things up had dropped off. Fortunately he had a spare. He needed some way to insure that the brace didn’t come off again.
I had a drill and some tie wire so he drilled a hole through the brace and wired it up.
Helena, Boulder and Basin.
After several miles of travel on a fairly good wide gravel road we came to I-15. We head toward Helena where we worked our way through the town and turned off on a road to Boulder. Cheryl and Dennis were looking for a motel of some kind but there was nothing in Boulder or Basin.
We pulled off in Basin by that bunch of vertical 2X4’s ahead, on the right, for a conference.
While we were there Dennis did some more work on his rack. It seems that all these bad roads are shaking up it pretty badly.
While Dennis worked on that, I called Verizon because some how Patti’s phone got locked and we didn’t know how to unlock it.
It took some time but we found out what to do and unlocked the phone.
Mormon Gulch.
We left Basin and climbed back on I-15 for a couple miles then took a turn off to get us back on the CDT. After an short ride through some nice country, we came to The Mormon Gulch Camp ground.
Bob, Patti and I decided to camp here while Dennis and Cheryl drove to Butte, Montana to get a motel.
We sat around outside for a little while and listened to some thunder.
It started to rain a little so we went inside to cook some supper.
Here I m warming up a can of Dinty Moore Stew. Yum Yum!
Okay that’s it from Mormon Gulch campground.
